Faculty Awards

Faculty awards recognize faculty achievements in teaching, scholarship, community engagement, and mentorship from the preceding academic year.

General Regulations

  • All nominations are submitted via depot.
  • Except for Use of Starfish, students, fellow faculty, staff, and administrators may submit nominations for any of the awards.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted for any of the awards.
  • Members of the Faculty Awards Committee may not submit nominations.
  • All nominations must be accompanied by supporting materials, submitted by email to facultyawards@guttman.cuny.edu. An updated CV is required for every nomination.
  • Each nominee is asked for an email accepting their nomination(s).
  • Multiple nominations are allowed. The number of nominations is not a factor in the selection of awardees.
  • The introduction of each awardee at the All-College Meeting is prepared by the award presenter.
  • Except for the Paul Naish Award, faculty awards do not carry monetary prizes.
  • Awardees receive an engraved plaque and a certificate signed by the President and the Provost.

The Paul Naish Award for Excellence in Teaching

To recognize exceptional teaching that contributes to student learning and pedagogical innovation.

Eligibility: Full-time faculty, inclusive of all categories of appointment

Process: A nomination is submitted via depot. To be considered, the nomination must be accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials that outline the nominee’s accomplishments in teaching during the preceding academic year, submitted by email to facultyawards@guttman.cuny.edu (2 pages maximum). Supporting materials may include, but are not limited to, a list of courses taught or created, with descriptions, and/or excerpts from the following: teaching observations, student evaluations or testimonials, lesson plans, assignments, syllabi, communications with partners, or student work. The nominee is asked for an email accepting the nomination. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardee.

Prize: $1,000

Award for Excellence in Teaching for Part-Time Faculty

To recognize exceptional teaching that contributes to student learning and pedagogical innovation.

Eligibility: Part-time faculty, inclusive of all categories of appointment

Process: A nomination is submitted via depot. To be considered, the nomination must be accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials that outline the nominee’s accomplishments in teaching during the preceding academic year, submitted by email to facultyawards@guttman.cuny.edu (2 pages maximum). Supporting materials may include, but are not limited to, a list of courses taught or created, with descriptions, and/or excerpts from the following: teaching observations, student evaluations or testimonials, lesson plans, assignments, syllabi, communications with partners, or student work. The nominee is asked for a letter accepting the nomination. An endorsement is also solicited from the faculty’s Instructional Team, Program of Study, or Practice Area. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardee.

Provost’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship

To recognize exceptional scholarly achievement during the preceding academic year, across a range of possible achievements (e.g., published scholarship, conference presentation, external grants).

Eligibility: Full-time faculty, inclusive of all categories of appointment

Process: A nomination is submitted via depot. To be considered, the nomination must be accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials that outline the nominee’s accomplishments in scholarship during the preceding academic year, submitted by email to facultyawards@guttman.cuny.edu (2 pages maximum). The excerpt of the faculty’s CV that contains all scholarship completed during the preceding academic year (only) must be submitted as well. Supporting materials may include, but are not limited to, a statement of impact (reports from Google Scholar, Academic Works, public scholarship); evidence of scholarship use by stakeholders; awards or formal recognitions for scholarship; or book reviews. The nominee is asked for a letter accepting the nomination. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardee.

Provost’s Award for Outstanding Faculty Mentorship

To recognize exceptional scholarly and professional mentorship (official and unofficial) within the Guttman community during the preceding academic year, supporting and guiding junior faculty.

Eligibility: Full-time faculty, inclusive of all categories of appointment

Process: A nomination is submitted via depot. To be considered, the nomination must be accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials that outline the nominee’s accomplishments in faculty mentorship during the preceding academic year, submitted by email to facultyawards@guttman.cuny.edu (2 pages maximum). Supporting materials may include, but are not limited to, lists of mentees, professional development activities led and/or created, events organized, or proposals designed and/or implemented. The nominee is asked for a letter accepting the nomination. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardee.

Provost’s Award for Exemplary Use of Starfish

To recognize exceptional use of the Starfish software system for student retention and success to provide students feedback on their performance, monitor their progress, and connect them to services in the Guttman community.

Eligibility: All full- and part-time faculty, inclusive of all categories of appointment, and all staff

Process: No nominations are needed. The Academic Technology Coordinator identifies Starfish Super Users based on analytics.
