A Library for the 2.0 World
Guttman Community College's library–the Information Commons (IC)—is located in the main area of the first floor and is a major learning resource for the College. A warm, comfortable space, this is not a traditional library. Students gather for information discovery, research, and social interaction. Students are encouraged to work in groups on assignments by using the Mediascape collaboration centers. The campus is also WiFi enabled.
The IC is also a virtual space open 24/7. Students can access their accounts from anywhere to use over 120 online databases, 50,000 full-text electronic journal and magazine titles, and 250,000 ebooks. As part of an integrated University library system and located within a short distance from the main New York Public Library, the IC also encourages access to these holdings.
The student-centered Information Commons provides a range of services and resources for learning, collaborative work, and individual study, writing and research. Research and reference service is available, and students can use the IC computers. With an emphasis on digital content and access over ownership, the College library teaches information literacy through discovery and active learning to help students understand the social impact of information.
