Andrea Morrell, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies and Anthropology, participated on a May 15 panel at The New School sponsored by the nonprofit Child Welfare Organizing Project. The event addressed the connections between mass incarceration and the child-welfare system.

A May 24 article in The Nation, For Women of Color, the Child-Welfare System Functions Like the Criminal-Justice System, examined how women of color are frequently—and disproportionately– investigated by child-welfare agencies to have their children taken from their homes and placed in foster care and, in some cases, taken from them. Professor Morrell, who worked in child welfare for many years, is frequently quoted in the article as a criminal justice expert.
