Molly Makris, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies, has co-authored an article in ChalkBeat  titled, “We Study School Choice and Gentrification. Here’s How New York City Should Prepare for Amazon.” In the piece, Professor Makris and colleagues discuss the necessary measures New York needs to take to ensure that schools and neighborhoods do not suffer as a result of the business giant’s presence.

According to the authors, New York and Virginia, where Amazon will also open offices, need to protect residents from displacement, provide high-quality, integrated schools, more classroom space, transparent school-choice options, and “culturally responsive educational systems.” Not doing so could potentially cause Amazon’s arrival to “exacerbate racial and economic segregation in our schools and tensions in our communities.”
