Professor Kristina Baines

Kristina Baines, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, has been awarded a 2019 tenure-track Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching. The Course-Hero Woodrow Wilson Fellowship is a “genius grant” for outstanding teachers.

For tenure-track junior faculty, the award emphasizes the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. For 2019, four tenure-track and four non-tenure-track professors were selected Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellows. The professors are already great college educators who are emerging leaders in their fields and are on a clear trajectory to help their students grow into the thought leaders—and innovators—of tomorrow.

Tenure-track fellows receive a one-year grant of $30,000, approximately $20,000 to engage a research or teaching assistant and the remainder to support travel and research. Professor Baines will be researching the ways in which ecological heritage practices influence health and wellness in Belizean indigenous communities (both Maya and Garifuna) in Belize, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles.

Kristina Baines is the only 2019 Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellow from a community college and is also the first Fellow from CUNY.
