Guttman Community College, in partnership with The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) of The New York Public Library, is celebrating National Poetry Month throughout the month of April with a series of events and workshops for the Guttman community and the general public. The theme for this year’s events is “Guttman Voices.” Over the course of the month, Guttman will host a panel discussion centered on how poetry influences our lives, a Photopoetry Workshop led by Professor Valdon Battice, a poetry writing workshop led by Professors Daniel Collins and Meghan Gilbert-Hickey, poetry readings by renowned poets Teka Lo and Raina León, and a live presentation of student writing which will showcase Guttman students sharing and celebrating their diverse and powerful voices through original poetry, prose and art. This exciting lineup of in-person events will be split between the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on 5th Avenue and the Guttman Library on campus.

Of the month-long celebration of poetry, Guttman President Larry Johnson, Jr. said: “The role of the poet is to captivate the hearts and minds of audiences or readers. Guttman Community College is a place where entrepreneurial approaches in scholarship and curriculum are celebrated. As Poetry Month commences, I am delighted that Guttman faculty planned and curated experiences that will engage students and the campus community to experience a genre that, since antiquity, has served to educate, inspire, and preserve historical moments that denote the zeitgeist of the times.”

The schedule of events with registration links, in addition to a “Poetry Museum,” short videos of students and professors discussing poems that are meaningful to them, biographies of featured poets and more can be found at guttman.cuny.edu/poetrymonth.
