Program of Study

Under the guidance of an exceptional faculty, the Business Administration Program prepares students to think critically, work effectively in teams, create and explore new opportunities to innovate while discovering opportunities to grow, get involved, make a difference and achieve dreams. An Associate degree in Business Administration enables graduates to apply critical thinking skills to real-world business problems, develop a global mindset, and think strategically in complex and diverse settings. This positions Business Administration students for admission and successful transfer to highly-competitive Bachelor programs, as well as their future professions and workplaces.

Business Administration students develop knowledge of accounting, economics, business law, and ethical business practices through coursework and experiences exposing them to concepts and principles of finance, marketing, operations, and international business. Students also gain proficiency in upper level mathematics courses. In addition, the National Association of College and Employers (NACE) Career Competencies are embedded within the Program to best prepare students for careers in the field.

Guttman’s emphasis on experiential and applied learning brings the business world into the classroom, allowing students to gain communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills in order to integrate knowledge across the curriculum and to acquire marketable job skills. Through this process, students learn to use technology to solve business problems; make business decisions; and enhance their analytical skills.


The Business Administration program develops intellectually curious students and prepares them for transfer to baccalaureate programs in Business Administration and/or employment in entry-level administrative and managerial positions in public or private enterprise.

To promote career readiness within the curriculum, the Program implements course design and experiences that promote and incorporate the National Association of College and Employers (NACE) Career Competencies:

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Business Administration program, students will be able to:

  • Research, critique and generate ideas using the principles and techniques of business;
  • Explain how social, cultural, technological and regulatory forces affect a business organization;
  • Recognize and classify diverse perspectives and demonstrate critical thinking when evaluating business environments;
  • Identify and deconstruct challenges and opportunities facing businesses in the dynamic and diverse environment of New York City working individually and on teams; and
  • Design practical, sustainable, efficient and ethically-responsible solutions to address business challenges.

Two Valedictorians for the Guttman Community College Class of 2021

For the first time in the College’s history, two outstanding students have been selected as Valedictorians of the Guttman Community College Class of 2021. Oluwadamilola Moses and Rena Safy have been exemplary scholars and leaders, and achieved perfect cumulative GPAs during their years at Guttman. Ms. Moses and Ms. Safy were honored for their achievements during the June 17th, 2021 virtual Salute to Graduates ceremony. The dual Valedictorians both majored in business administration.

Dr. Rodrigo Lobo Publishes and Speaks on “Technology Forecasting and Corporate Strategy”

In the midst of the pandemic, Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Rodrigo Lobo has contributed to the highest tier in the field of management and business. Despite the cancellation of the Academy of Management (AoM) Specialized Conference Advancing Management Research in Latin America, where he had been accepted to present this year, Dr. Lobo’s paper was published in the conference’s prestigious Global Proceedings. Stemming from this accomplishment, Dr. Lobo was also guest speaker at the Institut Supérieur de Gestion (ISG) Lab Research Seminar for graduate faculty, which was held online.

For Starlin Pimentel, It’s About Mindful Progress

Starlin Pimentel is all about making progress. He calls himself passionate and diligent about his work, and he strives for excellence every day. “I don’t want to just stay afloat, I want to raise my standards,” he says. He meditates regularly. At nineteen years old, he wisely says that the journey to success takes time, hard work, and self-awareness. Starlin is the first in his family to attend college. He grew up in the Dominican Republic and was raised in the Bronx. He confidently states, “I want to become someone who people look up to — someone of value.”

Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Rodrigo Lobo has been all about business for over 30 years. Before taking the daring “180 degrees toward full-time work in academia,” his career spanned the breadth of “corporate life.” For nearly a decade, Dr. Lobo contributed his analytical expertise to a unique public project: the Itaipu Binacional Company, an initiative of the Brazilian and Paraguayan governments that jointly runs one of the most productive hydroelectric power plants in the world.
