Faculty Awards

Faculty awards recognize achievements from the preceding academic year. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardees. The awards are announced and presented at the annual All-College meeting in January.

1. The Paul Naish Award for Excellence in Teaching

To recognize exceptional teaching that contributes to student learning, pedagogical innovation, and operationalization of the Guttman model.

  1. Process: A nomination (by student, staff, faculty colleague, or self) is submitted via Depot. The nominee submits a letter accepting the nomination and outlining their accomplishments in the area of teaching for the preceding academic year (2 page maximum), accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials.
    1. Eligibility: full-time faculty (inclusive of the various categories of appointment)
  2. Selection of the awardee is determined by the Faculty Awards Committee.
  3. Monetary Prize of $1,000

2. Award for Excellence in Teaching for Part-Time Faculty

To recognize exceptional teaching that contributes to student learning, pedagogical innovation, and operationalization of the Guttman model.

  1. Process: A nomination (by student, staff, faculty colleague, or self) is submitted via Depot. The nominee submits a letter accepting the nomination. An endorsement is solicited from the faculty’s Instructional Team, Programs of Study, or Faculty Practice Area.
    1. Eligibility: part-time faculty (inclusive of the various categories of appointment)
  2. Selection of the awardee is determined by the Faculty Awards Committee.

3. Provost’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship

To recognize exceptional scholarly achievement during the preceding academic year, across a range of possible achievements (published scholarship, conference presentation, external grants, etc.).

  1. Process: A nomination (by student, staff, or faculty) is submitted via Depot. The nominee submits a letter accepting the nomination and outlining their acceptance and accomplishments in the area of research for the previous academic year (2 page maximum). Supporting materials should include a statement of impact; evidence, if any, of scholarship use by stakeholders (reports from Google Scholar, Academic Works); and an excerpt from the faculty’s CV containing all publications and presentations for the identified period.
    1. Eligibility: full-time faculty (inclusive of the various categories of appointment)
  2. Faculty Awards Committee makes recommendation(s) to the Provost, who selects the awardee.

4. President’s Award for Community Engagement

To recognize exceptional leadership on the part of the instructional staff in the engagement of local communities beyond the walls of Guttman Community College.

  1. Process: A nomination (by student, staff, or faculty) is submitted via Depot. The nominee submits a letter accepting the nomination and outlining their acceptance and accomplishments in the area of research for the previous academic year (2 page maximum), accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials.
    1. Eligibility: all faculty and teaching staff
  2. Faculty Awards Committee makes recommendation(s) to the President, who selects the awardee.

5. Provost’s Award for Outstanding Faculty Mentorship

To recognize exceptional scholarly and professional mentorship (official and unofficial) within the GCC community during the preceding academic year, supporting and guiding junior faculty.

  1. Process: A nomination (by staff or faculty) is submitted via Depot. The nominee submits a letter accepting the nomination and outlining their acceptance and accomplishments in the area of mentorship (2 page maximum), accompanied by a concise selection of supporting materials.
    1. Eligibility: full-time faculty (inclusive of the various categories of appointment)
  2. Faculty Awards Committee makes recommendation(s) to the Provost, who selects the awardee.

6. Provost’s Award for Exemplary Use of Starfish

To recognize exceptional use of the Starfish software system for student retention and success to provide students with feedback on their performance, monitor their progress, and connect them to services in the Guttman community.

  1. Process: Award given based on user analytics.
    1. Eligibility: faculty (inclusive of part-time faculty and full-time faculty of the various categories of appointment) and staff
  2. Faculty Awards Committee selects the awardee based on analytics.

  • OSE Staff (appointed by OSE Dean)

Chair:

  • Dean of Faculty Affairs (non-voting member unless there is a tie)

Notes:

  • Faculty awards do not carry monetary prizes, except for the Paul Naish Award
  • Faculty will receive a statue and a certificate signed by the President and Provost
  • For the Faculty Mentorship Award’s inaugural year, the existing body will determine the recommended candidate. The 2019 awardee will serve during the 2020 cycle.
  • Academic Technology Program Coordinator will identify staff and faculty super user of Starfish.
