3. A: Teaching Modalities

When the campus begins to reopen gradually, planning considerations for teaching modalities across phases of reopening reflect the CUNY Guidelines for Safe Campus Reopening, the physical limitations of the campus (i.e., capacity for social distancing in a vertical campus; accessibility issues), the campus resources, pedagogical concerns, faculty and student needs and preferences, and the health, safety and wellbeing of our community members. Guided by these considerations, instruction will be offered in distance learning and in-person class formats at differing rates across the phases of reopening (see Table 3). In each phase, the Registrar, the Office of Student Engagement, the Communications team, and AccessABILITY office will continue to inform students of the relevant class modalities to ensure students can make informed decisions while maintaining their academic momentum.

At this time, we do not envision any regular in-person classroom instruction at Guttman until Phase 4 is concluded.

Anticipated Teaching Modalities as a Function of Reopening Phase:

Phase 0 through Phase 4: All online, asynchronous instruction.

Guttman Community College will be offering 100% of its classes in online modalities for the foreseeable future. Because of the space limitations at the College, we must take a conservative approach to re-entering classrooms for in-person instruction. While all Fall 2020 and future classes will be taught fully online, there are variations in how faculty members can organize and deliver online education, with the following online teaching modalities planned for Fall 2020 and future semesters throughout this period when COVID-19 prohibits or restricts in-person instruction. For fall 1 semester, Guttman will be offering 209 sections.

Asynchronous. For these previously in-person sections, class will have no set meeting times (students cannot be required to attend at specific times), with work accomplished asynchronously. Faculty will still be available to interact with students for remote office hours. In Fall 2020, approximately 100% of course sections will be taught in this modality. Faculty will hold optional workshop sessions for students. These workshops, open office hours, drop-in sessions complement the asynchronous courses. The times for these sessions are listed in CUNYfirst and these sessions are taped. Professor will notify students on the syllabus of the actual meeting schedule, and the schedule of class days and times remains in CUNYFirst. Faculty are reminded that recommended best practice is to record class sessions (or class lecture material) for students who cannot sign on for a given virtual class period.

Fully online. All courses originally scheduled as ‘fully online’ are taught asynchronously, consistent with prior CUNY guidelines. This was an existing designation and is included in the Asynchronous course percentage above.

Every class Guttman offers in Fall 2020 will be online.

Guttman Community College does not plan to offer any in-person/hybrid science lab courses until Phase 4 is concluded.

Numerous instructional technology resources are readily available to faculty (e.g., Eportfolio, Blackboard; Zoom) for teaching their courses, including an extensive array of training webinars, and technological support. Primarily all courses are being offered through Blackboard, with Blackboard Collaborate and Zoom used for Optional Synchronous sessions and Office Hours. In addition to training for online instructors provided by CUNY, Guttman has also invested heavily in providing training for faculty members to earn certification in online instruction and will continue to do so. 100% of all fall faculty are trained in Blackboard and Online Pedagogy. Students have access to online support for Blackboard as well, in addition to some training materials for online learning.
