Students may be required to file their taxes, based on their dependency status and yearly income. Students and alumni can receive assistance in their tax preparation by using an online, self-prep program through the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by the Revenue Service (IRS). The VITA Program sponsors provide free tax return preparation service for those who have low to moderate income as well as elderly taxpayers across the country.
If you need to file your 2020 taxes, Tax Department employees will walk you through your income tax returns, step-by-step. If you earned $72,000 or less in 2020, you qualify. Use your own laptop, desktop or tablet and download safe and secure online tax software to guide you through. You only need basic computer skills and an active e-mail account. Must have access to a smartphone or webcam to verify identity.
The following FREE webinar Zoom sessions to prepare and e-file your 2020 income tax return virtually are being offered:
- Session 1: Friday, February 19th from 10 am to 12 pm
- Session 2: Friday, February 19th from 2 pm to 4 pm
- Session 3: Monday, April 5th from 10 am to 12 pm
- Session 4: Monday, April 5th from 2 pm to 4 pm
- Session 5: Monday, April 12th from 10 am to 12 pm
- Session 6: Monday, April 12th from 2 pm to 4 pm

You will receive the Zoom link for your session and documentation and software requirements to ensure a successful session.
