June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, and Guttman Community College is excited to honor and celebrate our amazing LGBTQIA+ community! The first Pride march was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years, its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect. The college invites students, faculty, and staff to attend some of the many events happening across New York City, including Pride celebrations and marches. Indeed, CUNY will be marching in some of the parades, and Guttman hopes that many of you will join us!

On Sunday, June 5th, CUNY students, faculty, and staff will march in the annual Queens Pride Parade in Jackson Heights. Guttman would love to see all of our fabulous dancers at the Queens Pride Parade as the college seeks to reclaim our pre-pandemic title as Queens Pride Parade Rainbow Award winners. If you would like to show off your moves in front of a festive and raucous crowd, please sign up here!

Guttman’s inaugural “Lavender Celebration” will recognize and honor our LGBTQIA+ and ally students to acknowledge their essential achievements and contributions to the college. The event will take place in person on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 401 at Guttman College.

After two years of spectacular virtual celebrations, Guttman is making up for lost time with an awesome in-person Pride Festival. On Friday, June 10th, from noon until 4 p.m., CUNY students, faculty, and staff from all twenty-five schools in all five boroughs will celebrate their PRIDE in person at Queens College.

Brooklyn Pride, Inc. strives to increase visibility, acceptance, and inclusion to ensure equality for the LBGTQIA+ Community. The organization honors the Spirit of the Stonewall Riots. Please come march with us at 5th Avenue and Lincoln  Place at 6:30 p.m. on June 11th.

The New York City Dyke March is a protest march—not a parade. The Dyke March is a demonstration of our First Amendment right to protest and takes place without permits or sponsors. At a time when our rights are facing increased scrutiny, we recognize, now more than ever, that we must organize among ourselves to fight for our rights, safety, and visibility. This year the 30th Annual New York City Dyke March will set out from Bryant Park at 5pm on June 25, 2022.

Harlem Pride, in addition to being an opportunity for fun and celebration, offers a chance to share information and provide services to Harlem’s constituents, including referrals for health, legal and financial services, and on-the-spot testing for communicable diseases. We welcome the Guttman community to participate in Harlem Pride on Saturday, June 25th, from noon to 6pm.

On Sunday, June 26th, the fourth annual Queer Liberation March revives the goals and spirit of the original Christopher Street Liberation Day March in 1970. Born out of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, QLM declares: social justice, freedom, and access for all! The Reclaim Pride Coalition (RPC) will stage the QLM, and, as was the case in the previous three years, the QLM is a peaceful People’s March. There will be no regimented contingents, no corporate sponsors, and no NYPD control over decision making, nor uniformed police marching.

Last but not least, Guttman invites you to march with CUNY at NYC Pride on Sunday, June 26, at noon!

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month represents an opportunity to honor, celebrate, and advocate on behalf of those persons and ideas that are crucial to the diversity and flourishing of our community. Guttman College enthusiastically recognizes and supports PRIDE!
