Guttman is committed to providing a safe environment for the community. The College’s CARE team was established to identify, assess and monitor students displaying levels of distress, disruption or concerning behaviors that might warrant timely intervention. The team’s primary goal is to provide threat assessments, early intervention and support before a crisis arises.
Behaviors to refer to the CARE Team include, but are not limited to, unusual or bizarre behavior, passive expression of aggressive thoughts, psychological or behavioral concerns, physical/sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, stalking, disruptiveness, behavior that may be dangerous to oneself or others, or other behaviors that raise concern.

Submitting a CARE Referral
If you observe a student or classmate struggling with any of the following, submit the CARE referral form to get the student help and support.
- Expressing violent or aggressive thoughts or says things you think might be disturbing
- Disengaging and/or isolating themselves
- Experiencing dramatic mood shifts
- Making disturbing comments in conversation, email, letters, social media postings or papers
- Making threatening comments in conversation or in writing
- Showing disruptive, unusual or bizarre behavior
- Psychological or behavioral concerns – depression, severe anxiety/panic, anger outbursts
- Abusing alcohol or drugs
- Abuse – physical, emotional and/or sexual
- Partner violence
- Stalking
The more you tell us, the more we can help! Helpful information includes:
- Student’s name, ID number (if known) and any contact information you have for the student (email, phone #s) and any other individual(s) involved
- Specific behaviors you observed or information you read or heard
- Location where the incident or observation took place (classroom, social media, text, off campus)
- Time and date of incident or observation
- Direct quotes when possible
- Related voice recordings, text messages and emails
- Actions or steps you took to help or address the concern
Emergency Situations
Situations that warrant immediate intervention include violence or imminent threats to oneself or others.

After emergency personnel have been contacted, please submit the CARE referral form so the CARE Team can review and follow up accordingly.
