NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 4, 2023) – The Human Services program at Stella and Charles Guttman Community College received official accreditation from the Council for Standards in Human Services Education (CSHSE). Accreditation confirms that the program meets the highest standards in human services education. Guttman’s Human Services Program is only the second college in New York State to receive CSHSE accreditation.
“Human Services faculty and staff work diligently with the support of the administration to create a robust and supportive experience for our students,” said Nicole Kras, Ph.D., program coordinator of Human Services at Guttman Community College. “We are proud to have our program nationally recognized for meeting the highest standards in human services education.”
The CSHSE readers and site visitors noted many strengths of Guttman’s Human Services program, including that the program is well organized with support systems to serve this specialized cohort of students, is strongly supported by the administration, and uses a cohort model. The fieldwork program serves as a model program consisting of a dedicated full-time placement manager, use of field associates, and a variety of placement sites available to the students. It is supported by a large and diverse advisory board, and its curriculum is aligned with national standards.
The Human Services A.A. degree program at Guttman is accredited with no conditions from February 2023 to October 2028.
The Council for Standards in Human Services Education is committed to improving the quality, consistency, and relevance of human service education programs and assure best practices in Human Service Education through evidence-based standards and a peer-review accreditation process.
Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is CUNY’s first new community college in more than forty years. Reimagining what community college could be, Guttman opened its doors in Manhattan in August 2012 to create a research-based, innovative model focused on moving students efficiently toward graduation. Offering associate degree programs in a nurturing environment, the College provides holistic support and advising to ensure timely degree completion, and most graduates transfer to senior colleges. Guttman was named the best community college in America in 2020 and the top community college in New York State in 2020 and 2021 by Niche.com, and WalletHub ranked Guttman the #1 community college in New York State for 2025.
