Students can now pursue the fields of accounting and secondary education or enroll in a fully online Liberal Arts program
New York, N.Y. (November 15, 2024) – Guttman Community College (“Guttman”) introduced three new academic programs in the Fall 2024 semester, adding in-demand options that lead to meaningful careers. Supported by an integrated marketing campaign, students can now “Be the Future” of Accounting, Liberal Arts: Secondary Education in Social Studies, and a new option to enroll in a fully online Liberal Arts program.
“The new programs in Accounting, Secondary Education, and Liberal Arts demonstrate Guttman’s continued commitment to postsecondary education access for students across New York City. The addition of Accounting and Secondary Education meets a need for more professionals in these areas. Providing a fully online Liberal Arts program allows students to complete an associate degree with added flexibility,” said Guttman President Larry Johnson. “We look forward to continuing to meet the needs of our students and broader community.”
While Guttman has offered a Business Administration program since the College opened in 2012, the new Accounting program provides students with the opportunity to specialize in this high-demand subfield. The program will prepare students to enter bachelor’s degree programs in accounting after graduating from Guttman and provides the foundational skills and knowledge required to earn CPA certification.
The new Liberal Arts: Secondary Education in Social Studies program offers a new opportunity to study the field of education at Guttman. Foundational coursework in education, psychology, and the social sciences readies students to be advocates for student, family, and community educational success. Graduates will have the option of transferring to teacher education programs at four-year institutions or pursuing related fields that involve working with and supporting adolescents.
Expanding access to a Guttman education, the College now offers a fully online program in Liberal Arts. Consistently one of the College’s most popular majors, the Liberal Arts program includes a wide variety of courses in the humanities and social sciences. Students are able to explore multiple interests while honing their critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills, and they are now able to do so from any location.
“Under the leadership of President Johnson and Interim Provost Dr. Nicola Blake, the College has pursued strong curriculum development, including these three new programs designed to increase our ability to serve our students throughout New York City. I am pleased to help shepherd that good work and help build and assess these programs as they become a valuable resource to meet ongoing community need in our region,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Paul Reifenheiser.
The new programs exemplify a continued period of growth for the College. In the Spring 2024 semester, Guttman launched a Health Information Technology program. In Fall 2023, the College began accepting transfer students for the first time and also saw its highest enrollment in history with over 1,100 students. That semester, an International Business track was introduced as an option for Business Administration students as well as Cybersecurity and Networking tracks within the Information Technology program. The College also launched a Cybersecurity certificate program in collaboration with Henry Street Settlement and was proud to honor its first cohort of graduates in Spring 2024.
As of the Fall 2024 semester, the College offers a total of nine associate-degree programs and one certificate program. Details about Guttman’s academic programs can be found on the College’s website at guttman.cuny.edu/academics.
Stella and Charles Guttman Community College was CUNY’s first new community college in more than forty years. Reimagining what community college could be, Guttman opened its doors in Manhattan in August 2012 to create a research-based, innovative model focused on moving students efficiently toward graduation. Offering associate degree programs in a nurturing environment, the College’s three-year graduation rate consistently surpasses the national average, and most graduates transfer to senior colleges. Guttman is federally designated as a Hispanic-serving institution and minority-serving institution with more than 85% of the student population identifying as Latine or Black/African American. The College was named the best community college in America in 2020 and the top community college in New York State for 2020, 2021, and 2022 by Niche.com and other ranking agencies.
