Winning the Chapter Progress Award in the New York Region at the annual Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst convention from 4/3-4/5 in Kansas City, Missouri, Guttman’s Beta Phi Gamma chapter also placed as 1st runner-up for its Distinguished Honors in Action project, “Once Upon A Time in the Big Apple: Folklore and Fairytales in the Making of Hyphenated-Americans.”

This project combines secondary research on the purpose of storytelling with primary research in which students from diverse backgrounds collect oral histories from one another and their families. Focusing on fairytales and folklore shared with children in New York City — stories that, like the families of our students, originate from cultures around the world — the project explores how morality, values and cultural traditions are passed down across generations.

Two Guttman IT students were also recognized individually, with Jorge Morales and Daniel Carasquillo awarded 2nd runners-up in academic achievement for non-traditional students and most engaged non-officer member, respectively.

Representing Guttman were advisors Diana Zechowski and Sam Finesurrey with PTK chapter leaders Sabrina Qiu, Ejatu Jalloh, Lanasia White and Campbell Brice. Guttman boasts 69 newly eligible students, and out of our currently enrolled spring students, 112 are PTK members.
