The Public Safety team at Guttman Community College organized a Super Smash Bros. Doubles Tournament in coordination with the Gaming Grizzlies student club on December 2 in the College’s Atrium. The competition was open to all in an effort to build rapport between Public Safety officers and the Guttman community.

“Our incredible Public Safety officers don’t just keep our community safe; they are an integral part of the fabric of Guttman Community College. They are the first to greet you when you walk in the building, and they bring together students, faculty and staff to foster community, build bridges and create a sense of belonging on campus,” said Interim President de León Bhargava.

The Public Safety team is often seen attending events held around campus, from the Guttman Big Read book club series to the annual breast cancer fundraiser. Officers have previously organized events related to domestic violence awareness and women’s self-defense classes. The gaming event was the first with the goal of simply having fun.

“We wanted to showcase a more relaxed environment to highlight the humanity we all possess, including Public Safety,” said Corporal Andrew Fay. “We want faculty, staff and students to feel comfortable when they come to us with whatever issue they might have. We strive to participate in community building, as it allows us to create a positive, supportive atmosphere.”

The tournament was elimination style with participants being knocked out of the competition after losing a game. Because it was a doubles tournament with friendly fire enabled, teamwork amongst participants was essential.

Students Sincere Alston and Miguel Diaz were the winning team, receiving two Regal Premiere movie tickets. After winning together, the teammates became opponents to compete for the grand prize: a Nintendo switch pro controller, won by Diaz.
