Group Tutoring
Tutors work with a small group of students to help you improve your understanding and skills in a particular subject or topic. The tutor facilitates group discussions, provides individualized feedback and offers guidance to help you achieve your academic goals. Group tutoring provides an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning and can foster a supportive learning community, and it allows us to work together and learn from our questions, answers and explanations. Regular workshops are also offered on topics such as organization, study skills, the writing process, etc.
Embedded Tutoring
An embedded tutor is assigned to a class and works closely with a professor for a specific subject. With the faculty’s guidance, the embedded tutor helps you understand course concepts and enhances your engagement in the course. The embedded tutor offers support in the following ways:
Liaison | First Year Experience |
---|---|
• Works with individual faculty to offer tutoring support for specific course | • Works with team of faculty to integrate writing tutoring support for learning community linked courses |
• Attends one class session for initial introduction | • Attends weekly class sessions |
• Sends weekly reminders to all assigned students about individual and group tutoring supports available | • Meets weekly with instructional team to address any academic challenges that you may encounter |
• Checks periodically if you need extra support, are falling behind or are missing assignments | • Facilitates workshops and study groups to reinforce course material, promote active learning and encourage collaboration among students |
Embedded tutors are not dedicated to one course alone. In fact, they also provide other types of tutoring outside of the assigned class!

As such, we embrace a multilingual, culturally relevant and resourceful learning atmosphere that motivates you to draw on your own linguistic and cultural resources as you grasp new concepts and learning strategies. We are committed to fostering a growth mindset through non-evaluative methods, where challenges are viewed as opportunities for learning and development. We place you at the center of your learning experience, where your unique strengths, needs and aspirations guide our non-prescriptive approach.

Involves a cooperative partnership between the tutor and you, the student, where you both actively engage in the learning process. You work together with tutors, exchanging ideas, sharing perspectives, and jointly exploring subject matter, creating an environment that encourages participation, open communication, and shared responsibility for your learning outcomes.
Inquiry-Based (Socratic Method)
Facilitates discussions through “wh” questions (why, who, what, where, when, how) to stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students. Tutors encourage you to explore concepts deeply, express your thoughts, and arrive at conclusions through your own reasoning, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject.

Each session grows naturally from the one before. Tutors encourage you to explore topics in a comprehensive and context-rich manner, fostering a deeper understanding of how ideas and concepts relate to one another and to real-world applications.
