Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr., the second president of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), announces the launch of an annual speaker series to illuminate stories of key figures in New York City. The purpose of the series is to engage the broader community surrounding the College and introduce champions for student success and community colleges. This year’s theme is entitled, “Strength, Courage, and Resilience in the 21st Century,” in response to the ongoing health and racial injustice pandemics facing the nation and the world. Join Guttman President Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. as he engages in lively discussions with guests every month. Events are free and open to the public. The inaugural event of the series will take place virtually on October 21 at noon.
On September 15th, Guttman Community College joined the nation in celebrating the kick-off of Latinx Heritage Month (LHM). Often referred to as Hispanic Heritage Month, at Guttman the use of the term Latinx heritage is meant to embrace inclusion, bypass the erasure of the salient, intersectional identities of the Latinx community, and ignite conversation and evolution of thought regarding identity and inclusivity. To mark the month-long festivities, Guttman features a wide array of events.

To the Guttman Community:
Yesterday, by delivering guilty verdicts in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the US judicial system fulfilled its responsibility to George Floyd, his family, our national society, and the greater human family. This jury delivered a just outcome, but the difficult work is ahead, with each person called upon to accept responsibility—and bear witness—until everyone is treated with respect and dignity. To realize the promise that is the United States, thoughtful actions, not hollow, self-congratulatory words, are necessary. Today, the thoughts of Mr. Floyd and his family are held close by the Guttman Community, but we also remember the many others who have been denied inclusion, tolerance, justice, and respect. None are forgotten.
February 1, 2021 | President's Office
On Monday, February 1, 2021, the CUNY Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr., as the next president of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. His appointment will become effective on July 1, 2021. Dr. Johnson says this to the faculty and staff at Guttman about his selection: “I am honored and elated to be selected as the next President of Guttman Community College. During the interview process, it was evident that the students, faculty, staff, and community leaders are committed to the mission and vision of this innovative ecosystem within CUNY. The pandemic and social unrest have amplified the importance of public higher education. And as a College serving a diverse student body, our work is more critical than ever. I look forward to collaborating with you to ensure that Guttman remains one of the most student-centered, equity-minded, and data-informed community colleges in the nation.”
During these turbulent times, we want to remind you that we are here to support you. The news of the lack of an indictment for those responsible for the murder of Breonna Taylor hits hard and we know it can feel heavy. Remember, the Guttman community is here and ‘We Got Your Back.’
As further evidence of the College’s commitment to supporting you, I write today to share a message of support and solidarity from our President, Dr. Doris Cintrón:
Welcome to Fall 2020! Watch our messages to students and families:
