2022 Faculty and Staff Awards Presented

On Friday, May 13, 2022, the seventh annual awards were presented to faculty and staff in recognition of their outstanding service, commitment, and dedication to the College. The ceremony was the first back-in-person celebration of its kind since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Awardees were nominated by their colleagues.

Happy Lunar New Year! Nearly 2 billion people worldwide recognize this holiday signifying rebirth and renewal. I understand that many of you are celebrating at home or virtually, given the ongoing pandemic conditions and I wish you a wonderful set of celebrations to ring in the new year. Yesterday marked the end of the year of the Ox and today marks the start of the year of the Tiger.

Throughout this Black History Month, you will see many announcements, events, and calls to celebrate our Blackness and I encourage you to make time to do so.

President Johnson and Students See Thoughts of a Colored Man on Broadway

On November 6, President Johnson and students from the United Men of Color (UMOC) and Women of G.R.I.T groups had a chance to attend Thoughts of a Colored Man on Broadway. The critically acclaimed play reveals the experiences, hopes, and dreams of seven men. The script takes place in Brooklyn. During a group discussion after the event, the attendees shared their thoughts and impressions about the theatrical experience.

Guttman President Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr. Announces President’s Speaker Series

Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr., the second president of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), announces the launch of an annual speaker series to illuminate stories of key figures in New York City. The purpose of the series is to engage the broader community surrounding the College and introduce champions for student success and community colleges. This year’s theme is entitled, “Strength, Courage, and Resilience in the 21st Century,” in response to the ongoing health and racial injustice pandemics facing the nation and the world. Join Guttman President Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. as he engages in lively discussions with guests every month. Events are free and open to the public. The inaugural event of the series will take place virtually on October 21 at noon. 

Guttman Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month

On September 15th, Guttman Community College joined the nation in celebrating the kick-off of Latinx Heritage Month (LHM). Often referred to as Hispanic Heritage Month, at Guttman the use of the term Latinx heritage is meant to embrace inclusion, bypass the erasure of the salient, intersectional identities of the Latinx community, and ignite conversation and evolution of thought regarding identity and inclusivity. To mark the month-long festivities, Guttman features a wide array of events.

Guttman Community College President Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. Appointed to the Presidents Academy Executive Committee (PAEC) of the American Association of Community Colleges

Guttman Community College President Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. has been appointed as a representative for the Northern Region to the Presidents Academy Executive Committee (PAEC) of the American Association of Community Colleges. His term began on July 1, 2021, and will end on June 30, 2024.

Dr. Eva Fernández Appointed as Interim Provost of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College

On July 6, 2021, President Larry Johnson announced the appointment of Dr. Eva Fernández as the Interim Provost of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College.  Dr. Fernández comes to the College after serving as Associate Provost for Innovation and Student Success at Queens College since 2019.   She is humbled and excited to be appointed as Guttman’s Interim Provost: “Guttman is an impressive institution on so many levels: talented faculty committed to student success, an innovative multidisciplinary curriculum that draws from the vibrancy of the NYC context, and students as diverse as they are ready to engage with higher education.”

Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. Takes Office as Guttman Community College’s Second President

On Thursday, July 1, 2021, Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr. assumes the presidency of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. He was selected on February 1, 2021, by the CUNY Board of Trustees after a national search was conducted.  President Johnson comes to CUNY after serving as the president of Phoenix College, a community college in Maricopa County, Arizona.  He succeeds Dr. Doris Cintrón, who served as the College’s interim president from August 1, 2020-June 30, 2021.
